Automatic vs Manual — Which Should You Choose?

4 min read · Master's Driving School

The pros and cons explained, plus which is right for you in 2026.

Choosing between automatic and manual is one of the first big decisions every learner driver makes. Both have real advantages — the right pick comes down to your goals, budget and the kind of driving you'll do day-to-day.

Why pick manual?

A manual licence lets you drive any car — manual or automatic — which keeps your options open for work, hire cars and family vehicles. Lessons are usually a little cheaper per hour and most learners in the UK still take their test in a manual.

Why pick automatic?

Automatics are simpler — no clutch, no stalling, no gear changes. That means you can focus 100% on observation, road position and hazard awareness. Most learners pass faster in an automatic, and with EVs becoming standard, an automatic licence is more future-proof than it used to be.

Our recommendation

If you're nervous, anxious, or just want the quickest route to your licence — go automatic. If you want maximum flexibility and plan to drive older or work vehicles, stick with manual. We offer both, so book a taster lesson and see which feels right.
