What Is Pass Plus and Is It Worth It?

[DRAFT — written as a placeholder for the owner to review and edit before publishing.]

Passing your driving test is a huge achievement, but there is a lot of driving you may not have experienced yet. Pass Plus is a practical training course designed to fill those gaps and help new drivers stay safe in the first few months on their own. Here is what it involves and whether it’s worth it for you.

What is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is a course created by the DVSA for drivers who have recently passed their test. It usually takes at least six hours and is taught by an approved driving instructor. There is no exam at the end. Instead, your instructor assesses you as you go, and you need to reach the required standard in each module to complete the course.

What does the course cover?

There are six modules, each focusing on a type of driving that many new drivers find challenging:

Town driving, all-weather and rural roads

You’ll build on what you learned for your test, handling busy town centres and complex junctions, and learn how to adapt to rain, fog, ice and bright sunlight. On rural roads you’ll practise reading bends, dealing with narrow lanes and sharing the road with cyclists, horses and farm vehicles.

Night driving, dual carriageways and motorways

Driving in the dark can feel very different, so you’ll learn how to use your lights properly and judge speed and distance at night. Finally, you’ll gain experience on dual carriageways and motorways, including joining and leaving safely, lane discipline and overtaking at higher speeds. Learners can now take motorway lessons with an instructor, but many still pass without much motorway experience.

Can Pass Plus lower my insurance?

Some insurers offer a discount to drivers who have completed Pass Plus, which can help reduce what is often the most expensive part of running your first car. Not every insurer does this, and the amount varies, so it is worth checking with a few providers before you book. Even where there is no discount, the extra experience can help you avoid the kind of incidents that push premiums up.

Is it worth it?

If you passed your test recently and feel unsure about motorways, night driving or country roads, Pass Plus is a structured, confidence-building way to fill the gaps. It is particularly useful if you will soon be driving long distances, commuting on fast roads, or driving alone for the first time.

If you already have plenty of experience in these conditions, a few targeted lessons may be enough. Either way, your instructor can help you decide.
